Field guide

New to Slow-Sim? Start here. What the mode is, what you actually control, and what to do with your first season.

What Slow-Sim is

Slow-Sim is EA’s Super Sim mode in College Football 27, run at the SLOW speed setting so the game plays out at something close to real-life pace. You are not holding a controller during the game. The CPU plays both sides and you watch it happen.

An online Slow-Sim league is a group of coaches who all run their programs that way. Games get streamed so everyone can watch, and the league advances on a schedule the commissioner sets.

What you actually control

Everything except the sixty minutes of football. That sounds like less than it is — in practice it is nearly the whole game:

  • Recruiting. Who you bring in, and whether they fit what you run.
  • Development. Training, redshirts, and where your upgrade points go.
  • The roster. Depth chart, position changes, the transfer portal.
  • Staff and facilities. Who coaches your units and what you invest in.
  • Pre-game strategy. Game plan and packages — the last inputs you get before kickoff locks them in.

What decides games you don’t play

When nobody is on the sticks, the outcome comes from the roster and the plan. Ratings, archetype fit, how your two-deep is stacked, and how well your personnel matches the scheme you’re asking them to run. A roster built for one scheme and coached in another leaves production on the field every week, and you never get to paper over it with a good throw.

This is why preparation is the whole hobby. It is also why a coach who is bad at the game’s controls can be excellent at Slow-Sim.

Your first season

  • Pick a scheme you can actually feed. Look at who is already on the roster before you commit to a playbook that needs players you don’t have.
  • Fix the two-deep before you fix the class. Most new coaches recruit over a problem that was really a depth chart problem.
  • Recruit for fit, not stars. A three-star who matches the archetype your scheme wants will out-produce a four-star who doesn’t.
  • Watch your games. You gave up the sticks, not your eyes. The film is the only place some problems are visible.
  • Never miss an advance. Deadlines are the one hard rule in every league.

Finding a league

Most Slow-Sim leagues recruit through Discord and the CFB communities on Reddit and X. Before you join, ask three things: how often the league advances, whether games are streamed, and what happens when someone misses a deadline. The answers tell you almost everything about how the league is run.
